In Prophecies you can unlock outposts and towns by just hireing another player (runner) to run there and open them up for you.

I second this. It may be shallow, but it works.

Also: if you're going to run, be aware that there is no golden age of exciting end-game content at the end of the Guildwars chapters. Getting to the end IS the PvE content of Guildwars, once you've done that all that's left is mindless grinding for titles. And PvP.
In other words: don't twink, don't run, don't get carried by bored level 20's on your first time through, or you'll spoil your own game for you.
